The strings are monofilament nylon, and they're tempered, which makes them stable (for pitch) very quickly compared to untempered strings. This full scale size drawing gives exact dimensions, shapes for every instrument part, as well as suggestions for woods to use for building this instrument. Building your own instrument can be very rewarding work, so you will no doubt need this plan. The scale length (VSL) of the instrument in this ukulele building plan is 13.6 inches, and the overall length of the finished instrument is 21 inches. The instrument you'll end up building is very similar to a Martin 1K soprano uke from the early 1920's. This plan is a physical product, printed on paper. Our largest body (8” wide at the lower bout, 2 1/4” deep), your choice of both domestic and exotic woods, and much, much more - from scale length to sound holes. Go crazy and configure YOUR ideal dulcimer! Folkcraft Custom Series dulcimers are available in both a traditional Kentucky body and in a more contemporary California body. The Kentucky body creates a quieter, more subdued tone, and the California body offers a louder, more mellow, more guitar-like tone quality. More information can be found here.
