Dulcimers ship for free, worldwide! This instrument was named the DulciVox because it has a big, sweet voice, like that of a great singer. Thus the "Vox" part of the name - "Vox" is the Latin word for "voice". The Folkcraft DulciVox is available in two varieties - the "Standard" version, available here for $1495, and the "Pro" version, available on this page for $1895. These two instruments are identical, except that the Pro version has a built-in Fishman passive under-saddle pickup and an ebony fretboard veneer. Both versions of the Folkcraft DulciVox have tapered fretboards - higher at the nut than at the bridge - which allows the bridge and saddle to be at the optimum height for sound and tone, while still allowing a standard capo to be used at frets one, three, and four. We also undercut the fretboard beneath the last four frets, allowing the top to vibrate more freely. The benefits of a Folkcraft DulciVox over a traditional dulcimer? This dulcimer has more power and more sustain, while maintaining the sweet voice of a dulcimer. We accomplished this by having a bridge that wasn't part of the fretboard - this allows the top to vibrate more freely. By bracing (internally) this instrument like a traditional guitar, volume and sustain were both dramatically increased. To keep the cost down on the Folkcraft DulciVox Standard, there are limited customization options. This instrument has the woods, scale length, fret pattern, and other options listed below. We can set up your instrument for three strings, four strings (double melody), or four strings equidistant, whatever you request. For a more customizable instrument, please select the Folkcraft DulciVox Pro. For both the Standard and Pro versions, we've chosen mahogany and spruce as the woods, and won't be offering other options for wood choices. With the internal bracing featured on this dulcimer, we're chosen the "Classic F" sound hole as the best option. Building your own mountain dulcimer? You need this part. If you are making a dulcimer with 1/10" thick sides, our tail blocks are the perfect addition to your parts list. These tail blocks (tailblocks?) are angled correctly for our pre-bent hourglass (or our unbent teardrop) side sets. Use one of our precut tail blocks when you glue up the sides to the head, and this block will provide a secure foundation for your dulcimer assembly. Approximately 3/4" thick, and exactly 1 3/4" tall. Folkcraft tail blocks are available in sizes perfect for either 1 3/8" fretboards or 1 1/2" fretboards. Match your tail block to the correct head (which is also sized to the fretboard), and you'll be good to go! Folkcraft tail blocks are designed to be hidden inside your completed dulcimer, and the choice of wood species doesn't have a measurable effect on the instrument's tone quality. We make our tail blocks in a variety of woods, so your tail block will be made of walnut, cherry, mahogany, or any of a variety of other stable hardwoods.
