As with any piece using the alternating-thumb approach, the key is simply to get your picking-hand thumb going and play a melody over it with your fingers. The tricky thing about this particular arrangement of "When the Roll is Called up Yonder" is that you can’t get away with doing the melody in straight quarter notes. This lesson will be great practice for learning how to not have your fingers be slaves to quarter notes.

For a welcome change of texture, in the second section (bars 21–32), play the melody with your thumb on the lower strings while adding light chordal flourishes on the upper strings. Be sure to play the melody notes more loudly than the chords. Lightly brush the chords that fall on the beats downwards with your middle finger, and use your index finger for those on the ands of beats. Or, if you’d like, eliminate some or all of the chords—make it your own and have fun with it.

“Softly and Tenderly,” an old invitation hymn, makes excellent use of Orkney tuning and uses a strategic combination of fretted notes and open strings that allow the notes to cascade together in a beautiful, harp-like way. Orkney tuning is spelled, lowest string to highest, C G D G C D. That’s two Cs, two Gs, and Ds, and the open strings form a Csus2 chord. To access Orkney from standard, lower string 6 by two steps and strings 5 and 1 by one step each; raise string 2 by a half step.

“Blues is the truth!” This sophistry is often posited by people who obviously haven’t gotten to know many blues guitar players—and certainly have never lent them any money. Another common saying, “The blues is just a feeling,” is also only true in a metaphorical sense. All music (we should hope) expresses feelings, and blues, like all music, has specific structural and harmonic components. A few of these will be put to use in the following examples and song arrangements, starting with the construction of some essential chords.

By incorporating sus4 chords into your repertoire, you can expand your root-position backup options substantially. But there are even more colors you can explore with standard chords down at the nut of your guitar. Many popular songs get their distinctive character by using “slash chords,” which have bass notes that are different from those in standard minor and major chords, and which can be effective in creating moving bass lines and transitions between chords. In this lesson, Andrew DuBrock teaches you how to form common slash chords and use them in short progressions.

The sound of bluesmen on a budget remains an aesthetic legacy to the present day. Stellas from the 1920s now have four-figure price tags, and players shop for guitars, both vintage and new, that deliver a stiff, crunchy low end, strong midrange, and sustained highs. “Good for blues”—like the currently common “parlor,” “Piedmont” or “lap-style”—is a fabulously non-descriptive term when applied to a guitar. That said, here are a few notes that may be useful whether you’re looking for a MYSLAD (Makes You Sound Like a Dead Guy) instrument or not.

The word percussion might bring rows of congas, bongos, and timbales to mind. While you might not initially include your guitar in this category, it can be a percussive instrument if you know how to use it that way. One way to coax driving, percussive sounds from your guitar is by using scratch rhythms.
