The basic, three-chord blues shuffle is rhythmic bread and butter. The beauty of the blues is that, on the surface, it’s easy to understand even by newcomers to guitar. But the basic shuffle in this lesson can be played in myriad ways: from a steady eighth-note pattern to a jazzy walking bass line with syncopated chords. In this lesson, you will take on these rhythmic styles—the basic tools you’ll need whether playing solo or with a band—all in the guitar-friendly key of E major.

Fiddle tunes are not only great fun to play, as evidenced by their popularity at festival jam sessions worldwide, they are also great exercises in basic alternating picking, a technique that must be mastered to play fluid leads in many styles of music. The simple structure and steady stream of eighth notes in fiddle tunes allows you to concentrate on developing a smooth, even picking motion that will soon become second nature.

When you play this arrangement of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”—or really any alternating-thumb piece—it is highly recommend to palm-mute the bass notes. This creates a nice textural contrast while allowing the melody to stand out. Make sure to play this song nice and strong and clean throughout the arrangement.

With so many notes on your guitar’s fretboard, it can be hard to know which ones to use to craft a solo. But here’s a little secret: artists like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Duane Allman often used only five notes to create some of the greatest solos of all time, employing the magic of the minor-pentatonic scale and its close relative, the major-pentatonic scale. Guitarist Andrew DuBrock offers some sound advice on making your solos livelier and more dynamic.

'The False Lover Won Back' is another star-crossed relationship, this time sporting a surprise happy ending. Melodically, there are two verse forms: the short and the long. The short verse simply omits bar 9 through the 6/4 bar, jumping right to the last three bars, and finishing the same as the long verse.

Most guitarists, regardless of ability or genre, are familiar with playing pentatonic scales. Countless songs, melodies, solos, and classic riffs are based on the sound and structure of the pentatonic scale, which is literally any scale with five notes. However, most musicians refer to the major-pentatonic scale, which is built from scale degrees 1-2-3-5-6; or, a major scale without the fourth and seventh degrees. The minor-pentatonic scale (1-b3-4-5-b7) is an inversion of the major pentatonic (from the fifth note, or scale degree 6), and is often the first scale that guitarists learn on the fretboard.

Funk guitar might be most commonly associated with the scratchy electric rhythms of a player like Jimmy Nolen, in support of James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. But the acoustic guitar lends itself just as well to these cool percussive sounds, as evidenced by the guitar on the 1972 Bill Withers hit “Use Me” and more recent work by such artists as Ben Harper, India.Aire, and Ed Sheeran. So, how do you make your acoustic guitar sound raw and funky?

The first part of “Spanish Fandango,” a 19th-century American guitar classic, was included in the first Roots and Blues Fingerstyle Guitar book, where it was contrasted with a slide guitar version adapted from the playing of West Virginia songster Frank Hutchison. This time the original, composed by Henry Worrall, is paired with an even more variant canticle from a man who was literally a giant in old- time country music—John Dilleshaw, the Georgia string band leader who recorded this complex hillbilly symphony, was known as Seven Foot Dilly
