Drop two chord voicings are popular with guitarists of all styles, owing to their ease of fingering, reasonable three-to-four-fret span, and pleasing sound. The term “drop two” comes from big band jazz and orchestral arrangers who, when creating parts for four horns or stringed instruments, would number them one to four (typically the highest to lowest notes in a chord voicing). This is comparable to SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) parts in a four-part vocal choir.

The great Doc Watson made his first major appearance on a record playing this song along with banjo player Clarence Ashley. In this version of “God’s Gonna Ease My Troubled Mind,” the renowned player, recording artist and instructor Orville Johnson has arranged the song in a minor tonality, giving it a dark and haunting feel. Tune your guitar to a D-minor chord--DADFAD, from bottom to top--and let your instrument do the praying.

The 1920 recording of “Crazy Blues,” on the Okeh label, by Mamie Smith and her Jazz Hounds, is often cited as the first blues record. In this arrangement, the renowned player, recording artist and instructor Orville Johnson adds some interest to the old tune by using two different grooves to create more of a verse-chorus feel--a New Orleans rhumba for the verses and a four-to-the-bar walking bass for the choruses. Learn the song and dazzle your friends.

Blues Guitar Tips: The Major Pentatonic Scale As a guitarist, while you’re likely intimately familiar with the minor pentatonic scale, the major pentatonic scale might seem foreign. But actually, if you know the minor pentatonic scale, then you know its major counterpart. In this lesson by blues guitarist extraordinaire Pete Madsen, you’ll explore a handful of fingering patterns for that scale, then apply them to assorted licks, as well as a pair of solos on the 12-bar blues form. With any luck, in the process you’ll become just as fluid with the major pentatonic as the minor pentatonic scale.

Here’s a good old-time gospel tune that’s about as bluegrass as they get—an arrangement that works quite nicely with a thumb-led approach in the mold of “Mother” Maybelle Carter. Try playing it in the key of C, which will give you lots of ringing open notes.

Standard tuning can be a huge security blanket. Tweak a tuning knob, and many guitarists will run for the hills. But exploring alternate tunings automatically inspires you to play the guitar in a different way and can introduce you to sounds you might not discover in standard tuning. Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, for instance, used the most basic of alternate tunings in the iconic song “Never Going Back Again” to generate forward momentum with the guitar. In this lesson, I’ll take a look at dropped-D tuning, and how much of what you know.

There’s no shortage of possible explanations for why so much contemporary popular music seems stuck in a rut, but here’s a good one: lack of harmonic imagination. Chords can suggest melodies just as much as melodies can suggest chords, yet many of today’s most successful writers rarely venture beyond a few standard progressions. That’s not to say you can’t still work wonders with even the most overused tropes—think of how many great tunes are oriented around I-IV-V or I-V-vi-IV. But if you’re sticking too much to the harmonically tried and true, you’re limiting your melodic choices. Well, if the song doctors won’t come up with something more interesting, you can.

Memphis blues originator Furry Lewis called Vastopol the learning key. With the tonic note on the lowest and highest strings, it’s easy to play bass and melody at the same time. Basic chord shapes in the first position are also easily formed. The open D chord affords an octave bass line on the sixth and fourth strings with the option of adding the A on the fifth string. The low D, although technically part of the G chord, is best left out; a fifth-to-fourth-string bass part gives an effective third (B) in the bass. Likewise, the A7 is also a five-string chord. (This voicing has no third in it.) Thumb through these changes, then practice playing these simple arrangements of a couple of folk songs.

'Fair Flower of Northumberland' is quite a slice of family drama, proving that willful teenagers are nothing new and that fathers and mothers can still have very different views of adolescent rites of passage. You can mix and match the high and low pedal notes as you like as long as you maintain the loping groove.
