From ragtime piano to bluegrass banjo to the Bo Diddley beat, three-against-four rhythms can be heard throughout American music. Emphasizing groups of three notes while playing in the 4/4 time signature (which is so prevalent in Western music that it is often referred to as “common time”), the three-against-four rhythm is so ubiquitous it can scarcely even be called syncopation anymore. In this lesson, explore the fingerboard with some exercises that emphasize three-note and three-beat patterns while playing in 4/4.

If you want to be a musician, it’s helpful to know the language musicians use to communicate musical ideas and thoughts. And most musicians use standard notation. Guitarists do tend to run in packs, so it’s possible to go through your musical life without interacting with musicians who play other instruments, but if you limit yourself to playing guitar music written in tablature, you’ll miss out on an awful lot of great music and musical ideas. Scott Nygaard offers some practical tips to get you started on the road to sight-reading.
