Funk rock

John Frusciante

Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1991 to 2006

A board organised around a wah with an unusually wide sweep and a chorus with a genuinely strange voicing. The clean parts are as effected as the loud ones, which is why the quiet sections never sound thin.

The chain

Shown in conventional signal order rather than the order the sources list them, so it reads the way it would be wired: guitar on the left, amp on the right.

    Electro-Harmonix Big Muff

    Drive / fuzz

Thicker, more sustaining gain where the DS-2 would be too sharp.

    Modulation

The wide, slightly detuned cleans on the verses, and a large part of why they sit so far back in the mix.

Editorial gear history, assembled from interviews, rig rundowns, live photography and liner notes. John Frusciante is not affiliated with Gear Avail and nothing here is an endorsement. Rigs change between tours and between takes, so this one is scoped to 1991 to 2006 rather than presented as a career-long setup. In most cases what is documented is that a pedal was on the board during those sessions or that tour, not that it is audible on a specific bar of a specific take.
